Tulips / Tulpen / Tulipa

Tulips form a plant genus in the lily family (Liliaceae). The approximately 150 species are common in North Africa, Europe and Central Asia. Their name goes back to the Turkish word tülbend and Persian word dūlband and originally designated a turban in these languages. The origin of the word can be traced back to Sanskrit: तूल (tuula), which is translated as "cotton". Probably the meaning of the term was transferred because of the similarity in colour and shape of the tulips to the turban cloths of the noble Ottomans that were common at that time.
