Antarctica - Falkland Islands

Antarctica Photo Safari 2008, First Stage: Falklands - New Island and West Point Island

The Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas) is an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf.
The islands are about 483 kilometers east of South America's southern Patagonian coast, and about 1,210 kilometers from the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, at a latitude of about 52°S.

There are five penguin species breeding on the islands, King-, Rockhopper-, Magellanic-, Gentoo-, and Macaroni Penguins.
Approximately 494,500 breeding pairs are thought to live on the island, 500 of which are King Penguins.
The largest breeding population of Black-Browed Albatross is found on the islands, making up over 80% of the global Black-Browed Albatross population. This is the only breeding species of Albatross, although nine others have been recorded. Many species of Petrel also nest on the Falklands.
